Cookies and Cigarettes

i remember the wipers slicing through the windshield's wicked sleet
and the blankets of snow quietly obscuring the prints of our feet
we grabbed all the red tissue, piled it next to the cheap garland
that you once drunkenly wore and swayed like you were someone's darling
there was glitter on my fingers and it twinkled silver and gold
fingerprints like christmas wreaths on window panes and doors
oh its an angry world and it probably needs some help
but I've had my fill so i will stay inside and sing carols with myself
gonna tempt the cabin fever lying deep in a cup-de-sac
suburban slice of indo-cheer, I've starting keeping things i should toss
watching rerun movies on this old couch, day old cookies and cigarettes
cause my lion's heart has gone to sleep, there nothing but the simple facade left
there was glitter on my fingers and it twinkled silver and gold
fingerprints like christmas wreaths on window panes and doors
oh its an angry world and it probably needs some help
but I've had my fill so i will stay inside and sing carols with myself
(something stuck with me)

Last Time

I've got a bad feeling about this place
the workers are so small and they are never late
with a ho ho ho they just all fall in line
you gotta see it to believe it
baby, I'm not lying
well, this man comes around with a wink and nod
his face is all red like he's been hitting the nog
oh it must be spiked like a star on a christmas tree log
two more drinks and they will all sing along
well, I'm stuck up here while you sleep all night
this place is alive but I'm afraid for my life
i play the same song til the good deed is done
they pay me with drinks and cheer and sleigh ride home
this is the toughest gig that i have ever had
the sound is great but this crowd is so bad
just a few broken bottles and some folks on their stools
this the last damn time i play for tips at the north pole

sometimes you have to stay at home
you have to hide away
the world is so big and cold
that you have to burrow deep into your little cave
please make your world into a place that is warm
please save me a place
just a little crease where we can build
where we can build
where we can build
where we can build a fire
don't feel bad about being reckless
its such a common risk to be judged for who you like best
and how you pound the air with your little bitty fists
does breaking glass mean you're sick
alone in your room where their fingers can't reach you
they want you trained, they wanted you groomed
please make your world into a place that is warm
oh, please save me a place
just a little crease where we can build
where we can build
where we can build
where we can build a fire
